What Are Dentures and Crowns?

โมเดลฟันปลอม

Dentures are prosthetic devices designed to replace missing natural teeth whether a single tooth, multiple teeth, or an entire arch. Dentures are available in both removable and fixed forms.

Removable Dentures: Commonly used for patients missing one tooth, several teeth, or all teeth. They can be removed for cleaning and are ideal for patients whose oral conditions aren't suitable for dental implants. Removable dentures are more affordable than fixed alternatives.

Fixed Dentures include:

  1. Dental Crowns: Individual caps placed over natural teeth following root canal treatment, or to restore fractured teeth or teeth with large fillings that repeatedly break. Crowns provide superior strength compared to standard fillings, preventing fractures.
  2. Dental Bridges: Used to anchor artificial teeth to adjacent natural missing teeth by grinding out neighboring teeth and placing at least three connected crowns. This treatment is less common today, as dental implants are now preferred. Bridge preparation requires grinding natural tooth structure, makes cleaning difficult, and may lead to decay in supporting teeth if oral hygiene is inadequate.

Dental Crowns are restorations that completely cover an existing tooth using special materials such as ceramic, metal, or zirconia to strengthen the tooth and improve its appearance.

Ideal for:

  • Cracked, fractured, severe attrition or severely decayed teeth that cannot be filled
  • Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment
  • Reshaping teeth for aesthetic purposes (cosmetic crowns)
  • Widely spaced teeth with food impaction
  • The teeth have a malocclusion problem. This treatment aims to correct the bite.

At Siam Dental Clinic, we're committed to restoring not just your teeth, but your confidence and joy in everyday life.

Whether you need a single crown or complete mouth rehabilitation, our specialized team will create a personalized solution that brings back your beautiful smile.

Who Are Ideal Candidates for Dentures and Crowns?

1. Individuals Missing One or More Teeth

If you've lost some teeth but still have natural teeth remaining, both removable dentures and bridges can restore your chewing function and smile to near-natural condition. However, traditional bridges are becoming less common today because they require grinding out healthy adjacent teeth for support and retention of missing teeth. Dental implants placed in the extraction sites are now the preferred alternative.

For the patients who have limitations of budget, removable dentures are the appropriate choice for them.

2. Patients with Severe Decay, Fractures, or Extensive Wear

Crowns are ideal for teeth with strong roots but damaged upper structure. A crown reinforces the tooth and extends its functional lifespan when the damage is too extensive for a simple filling.

3. Patients Who've Had Root Canal Treatment

After root canal therapy, teeth that were severely decayed often have significant tooth structure loss. Standard filling materials are prone to fracture in these cases. Dentists typically recommend crowns for long-term protection, especially for back teeth. Front teeth with adequate remaining structure that don't have too heavy chewing forces or serve as denture/bridge anchors may be restored with fillings instead. Consultation with your dentist after root canal treatment is essential.

4. Patients with Limitations for Dental Implants

Some individuals cannot receive dental implants due to insufficient bone volume, certain medical conditions, unwillingness to undergo surgery, or budget constraints. In these cases, removable dentures or bridges offer suitable alternatives.

5. Those Seeking Cosmetic Enhancement

In certain situations, crowns can reshape teeth for aesthetic purposes or replace veneers with ceramic crowns when patients desire both beauty and strength enhancement.

Advantages of Dentures and Dental Crowns

  1. Restore chewing efficiency, speech, and a confident smile.
  2. A wide range of options to suit different budgets and lifestyles.
  3. Enhance facial appearance and improve overall oral health
  4. Preventing tooth shifting and tilting caused by gaps between teeth.
  5. Made from high quality materials such as Zirconia and ceramic, providing natural-looking and long-lasting results.

Disadvantages of Dentures and Dental Crowns

  1. Removable dentures must be taken out and cleaned daily
  2. Removable dentures can trap food particles underneath the base. Poor hygiene or failing to remove them for cleaning can lead to decay of the abutment teeth, as well as gum inflammation and fungal or bacterial infections.
  3. Dental bridges are more difficult to clean than single crowns. When a bridge is supported by natural teeth, poor oral hygiene can lead to decay in the prepared anchor teeth, potentially resulting in the need for a root canal or even extraction. Over several decades of use, these prepared teeth may become non-vital (dead), requiring later root canal treatment. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to heavy biting forces can cause the anchor teeth to become loose or mobile, eventually leading to their removal if the patient loses maintenance or is regularly checked up by the dentist.
  4. Implant supported bridges (or one piece multiple crowns on implants) are more difficult to clean than a single crown on a single implant. If proper hygiene is not maintained, it can lead to peri-implantitis (gum disease around the implants) or severe periodontitis. This may cause the implants to become loose or fail, eventually requiring their removal.
  5. Dental crowns and bridges require the reduction of the natural tooth structure. For a dental bridge, the abutment teeth (neighboring teeth) must be prepared and reshaped to support the restorations.
  6. An longer adaptation period of removable dentures are required more than fixed restorations such as crown and bridge or implant with fixed restorations during the initial stage of use
  7. Crowns, bridges, or fixed dentures or Implants with overdentures are more expensive than removable dentures; however, they are still more affordable than dental implants

However, these issues can be avoided or minimized if the treatment is performed correctly and tailored to the individual's needs. Success depends on maintaining excellent oral hygiene and attending regular, consistent check ups with a dentist.

Post-Treatment Care for Dental Crowns at Siam Dental Clinic

  • Avoid hard foods initially to prevent impact if there are any "high spots" (premature contacts), which can cause pain. If you experience discomfort, you should return to your dentist for an immediate adjustment. Once you can chew without symptoms, the restoration is ready for full use provided the dental cement has reached 100% bond strength. This timing depends on the specific type of cement used; please strictly follow your dentist's instructions.

The capacity to chew hard foods depends on several factors: the material of the crown selected, the amount of remaining natural tooth structure, the strength of the anchor teeth, and your individual biting force.

Oral Hygiene Instructions

  • Brushing: Brush thoroughly, including hard-to-reach areas, using specialized brushes as recommended by your dentist.
  • For Bridges: You must use Superfloss or a Floss Threader in conjunction with standard dental floss to clean under the bridge.
  • Brush thoroughly in all areas using an interdental brush or a precision toothbrush
  • Use dental floss regularly; in some cases, an antibacterial mouthwash may be recommended by the dentist to prevent tooth decay
  • Attend regular dental check ups to monitor the condition of the crown and receive professional cleaning to prevent long-term complications

Post Treatment Care for Removable Dentures at Siam Dental Clinic

  • Immediate Cleaning: For removable dentures, you must remove and rinse them immediately after every meal.
  • Oral Hygiene: You should also brush your remaining natural teeth immediately after eating to prevent tooth decay.
  • Denture Soaking: Soak your dentures in clean water when not in use. If there are stubborn stains or dental stone that cannot be brushed off, soak them in a solution of water and baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) for at least 15 minutes, or use specialized denture cleansing tablets.
  • Fit and Maintenance: Regularly check the fit of your dentures. If they become loose, see your dentist immediately for an adjustment.
  • Usage Limits: Avoid using removable dentures to chew excessively hard foods to prevent damage or breakage.

The doctor's aunt is cute, kind, and gives very good advice. For my first time having dentistry, I wasn't afraid at all. The nurses are also cute. Explain to your younger sibling first so that he or she won't be afraid. The place is clean and spacious. There are toys to play with while waiting.

Have been coming here for ten years now. The doctor is very skilled. Wisdom tooth extraction is good, tartar scaling, etc. are also good. The staff are friendly and attentive. I've been to other places that are cheaper and closer to home. In conclusion, we have to come back here as usual because other places don't work as well.

Frequently asked questions about wearing teeth and dentures
Which type of dental restoration looks the most natural?
Zirconia or ceramic crowns and bridges provide the most natural appearance, offering excellent color matching and translucency that closely resembles natural teeth.
Who is suitable for removable dentures?
Removable dentures are suitable for patients;

  • who have lost multiple teeth and are not candidates for dental bridges or crowns. They are also appropriate for patients who have lost a single tooth and are seeking a more cost-effective solution, as removable dentures are significantly more affordable than fixed restorations.
  • removable dentures are recommended for patients who have lost the last molar teeth in the arch and therefore lack posterior abutment teeth for a bridge, or for those who prefer to avoid dental implant surgery due to budget limitations or personal preference.
  • Surgical Contraindications & Preferences: The patient does not wish to undergo surgery for dental implants or is not a candidate for implants due to insufficient bone volume, underlying systemic health conditions, or dental anxiety (fear of surgery).
  • Conservative Approach: The patient prefers to avoid the reduction (shaving down) of natural tooth structure required for dental crowns or fixed bridges.
How long do dental crowns last?
The longevity of dental crowns depends on the patient’s oral condition and daily care. In general, dental crowns can last many years or longer or more  with proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups and within the  condition of the anchor (abutment) teeth was healthy, with no prior history of pain, swelling, or other issues before the crown procedure was initiated."

Is tooth reduction required before placing a crown or bridge?
For dental bridges, adjacent natural teeth must be prepared (reduced) to support the bridge. In some cases, a dentist may recommend dental implants as an alternative.
For individual dental crowns, tooth preparation is also required to create sufficient space for proper crown placement.
Which type of dental restoration does not need to be removed daily?
Dental crowns, bridges, and implant-supported fixed crowns or bridges are fixed restorations and do not need to be removed.
In contrast, removable dentures must be taken out and cleaned regularly by the patient.
However, regardless of the type of restoration fixed or removable regular dental check-ups, professional scaling, and polishing are essential to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
Why do new dentures cause slurred speech, excessive saliva, or difficulty chewing?
When you first start using removable dentures, it is normal to experience slurred speech, increased salivation, or a lack of confidence while chewing. These occur because your mouth and tongue need time to adapt to the new foreign object.

Wearing new removable dentures requires an adjustment period. It may take several days, weeks, or even 2–3 months to feel fully comfortable. However, if these issues do not improve, or if you experience any pain or soreness, you should return to your dentist for an immediate adjustment.
How much chewing force can a dental crown handle?
The durability of a crown depends largely on the type of material used. If a high-strength material is selected and the procedure is performed according to standard clinical principles, the crown can function very similarly to a natural tooth.

However, its strength is also limited by the condition of the abutment (anchor) tooth before the crown was placed. If the natural tooth had very little remaining structure or existing cracks, you should avoid hard foods or high biting forces, as these could cause the tooth or the root to fracture.

Even if the anchor tooth is strong, you should avoid excessively hard items just as you would with natural teeth. Examples include:

  • Ice cubes
  • Bones
  • Hard nuts (Almonds, Macadamias)
  • Nut brittles or sugar-coated nuts
  • Fruit seeds/pits
  • Crab claws
  • Crispy fried fish (with bones)
