What Is Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry focused on correcting malocclusion, misaligned teeth, and jaw growth irregularities. The primary goals of orthodontic treatment are to improve teeth alignment, correct malocclusion (bite alignment) and balance the growth of the upper and lower jaws to enhance chewing efficiency and make oral hygiene easier. Properly aligned teeth help reduce the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, periodontal disease, and other long term oral health problems. In some cases, orthodontic treatment can also improve speech clarity.

Beyond health benefits, orthodontic treatment significantly enhances facial aesthetics and smile appearance, helping to improve overall facial harmony. A well aligned smile can boost self confidence and positively impact daily life and social interactions.

Who Is Orthodontic Treatment Suitable For?

Orthodontic treatment is not only about esthetics it is a comprehensive solution for improving oral health, function, and facial balance. It is recommended for patients with the following conditions:

1. Crowded, overlapping, or misaligned teeth Crowded teeth can impair chewing efficiency and make oral hygiene difficult, increasing the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and periodontitis. In crowded cases, the bone between tooth roots may be thinner, making it more prone to bone loss and gum recession.

2. Protruding teeth, spacing, or underbite (lower teeth overlapping upper teeth) These conditions can affect facial appearance, personality, and self confidence. They may also contribute to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems over time, impact facial structure and symmetry, and in some cases affect speech clarity. Gaps between teeth also allow plaque and calculus to accumulate more easily.

3. Improper bite alignment (malocclusion) Such as deep bite, open bite, or crossbite, which can negatively affect chewing, speech, and jaw health. Limited chewing areas may cause patients to chew on only one side, leading to facial asymmetry. A deep bite can result in excessive tooth wear and loose contact points, worsening bite problems over time.

4. Imbalanced growth of the upper and lower jaws In some cases, orthodontic treatment must be combined with orthognathic (jaw) surgery to improve facial harmony and bite function. At Siam Dental Clinic, patients can be referred to the Faculty of Dentistry of public universities for surgical treatment, significantly reducing costs compared to private hospitals.

5. Patients who have had previous orthodontic treatment If teeth have shifted or become crowded again after prior treatment, reassessment may be required for second-time orthodontic treatment or fabrication of a new retainer.

6. Children with early signs of orthodontic problems Children with tendencies toward crowding, thumb sucking, mouth breathing, or imbalanced jaw growth should receive early orthodontic evaluation. In many cases ,growth-modifying appliances are most effective during active growth phases. Early intervention can significantly increase treatment success, promote balanced facial development, and reduce the need for future jaw surgery.

Siam Dental Clinic has experienced orthodontic specialists in growth modification therapy to help guide proper jaw development and achieve harmonious facial proportions.

If you experience any of the conditions above, orthodontic treatment may be the right solution not only to improve your smile and confidence, but also to enhance long term oral health and function.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

1. Improves tooth alignment and facial aesthetics Well aligned teeth enhance both your smile and overall facial appearance, helping improve personality and boost confidence in daily life.

2. Corrects bite alignment and improves chewing efficiency Proper orthodontic alignment allows for more effective chewing and better food breakdown, reducing strain on the jaw. Correcting imbalances between the teeth and jaws also supports overall digestive function.

3. Enhances oral hygiene and reduces long term dental problems Proper teeth alignment is easier to clean, helping reduce the risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, plaque accumulation because orthodontic treatment improves tooth alignment, creating the correct distance between tooth roots, preventing the roots from being too close together. If the roots are too close, there will be less bone between them, leading to rapid bone loss. If not cleaned or cared for properly, this can easily lead to periodontal disease.

In addition, correcting crowded and crooked teeth reduces the chances of tooth decay, gingivitis, and long-term tartar buildup that can lead to severe gingivitis and even periodontal disease in the long term.

4. Prevents abnormal tooth wear caused by improper bite Correcting malocclusion helps prevent excessive tooth wear in areas of poor contact in some cases, allowing natural teeth to remain healthy and functional for longer.

5. Establishes a strong foundation for oral health in children Metal braces help guide the eruption of permanent teeth, making oral hygiene easier and reducing the likelihood of tooth loss in the future.

6. Improves facial balance and profile In certain cases, orthodontic treatment can enhance facial harmony, making features such as the chin, nose, or overall facial profile appear more balanced and well defined.

The doctor's aunt is cute, kind, and gives very good advice. For my first time having dentistry, I wasn't afraid at all. The nurses are also cute. Explain to your younger sibling first so that he or she won't be afraid. The place is clean and spacious. There are toys to play with while waiting.

Have been coming here for ten years now. The doctor is very skilled. Wisdom tooth extraction is good, tartar scaling, etc. are also good. The staff are friendly and attentive. I've been to other places that are cheaper and closer to home. In conclusion, we have to come back here as usual because other places don't work as well.

Frequently asked questions about orthodontics
Is orthodontic treatment painful?
Most patients experience mild tightness or discomfort during the first 2–3 days after braces are placed or adjusted. This is normal and can usually be relieved with over the counter pain medication. The discomfort typically subsides within a few days.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
On average, orthodontic treatment takes approximately 18–30 months, depending on the complexity of each case and the patient’s cooperation, such as attending scheduled appointments and maintaining good oral hygiene.e.
Will my facial appearance change after orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment can improve facial balance and profile, especially in patients with bite or jaw discrepancies. The extent of change varies depending on the individual’s facial structure and the specific treatment plan.
Is tooth extraction always required before orthodontic treatment?
Not always. Tooth extraction is considered only in specific cases, such as severe crowding, protrusion, or when tooth size is disproportionate to jaw size. Extractions may also be recommended to improve facial profile in cases of excessive dental protrusion. Your orthodontist will carefully evaluate your condition and explain the reasons before proceeding with treatment planning.
Will teeth move back after orthodontic treatment?
Teeth may gradually shift if retainers are not worn as instructed. Wearing a retainer is essential to maintaining long-term results. If a retainer is lost or damaged, it is important to consult your dentist promptly for a new impression and retainer fabrication as soon as possible.
How long should you wear a retainer after orthodontic treatment?
This depends on each patient's pre orthodontic problem. Generally, it should be worn for at least 3-5 years. However, in many cases, if the goal is to maintain the post orthodontic condition permanently, a retainer should be worn for life, albeit with longer intervals between wears, or only at night. After wearing a retainer for more than 5 years, you may consider wearing it only at night, once a week, or once or twice a month for life. It is essential to consult your orthodontist after treatment is complete and maintain consistent retainer use to ensure the longest possible treatment outcome. Patients with a large tongue or gaps between teeth before orthodontic treatment often need to wear a retainer for life to prevent the need for a second round of orthodontic treatment.
At what age should orthodontic treatment begin?
Generally, orthodontic treatment usually begins after all baby teeth have fallen out, or around age 10-12.

However, if there are structural abnormalities in the upper or lower jawbone, it may be necessary to stimulate growth for proper and balanced development. In such cases, orthodontic treatment may need to begin in early childhood, around age 6.

But in cases where jaw development is delayed beyond the age of stimulation, orthodontic treatment combined with jaw surgery may be necessary. This may require waiting until an age when facial structure growth has almost ceased.
  • For women: Age calculated from the date of onset of menstruation + 5 years.
  • For men: 18 years and older.
It is advisable to consult an orthodontist early on if any abnormalities are detected, so that the problems can be addressed promptly.
